Emmanuel Tometin, Ekiti State man who raped grandma to death to die by hanging
A High Court in Ekiti State has condemned a 27-year-old man to death by hanging for raping and killing a 63-year-old woman. The accused person, Mr. Emmanuel Tometin, who hails from Ekore Village in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State, was reported to have raped and killed Mrs. Ikubolaje on August 17, 2006 at about 2:00p.m at Oke Sele farm, Igirigiri Road, Odo-Ado in Ekiti State. She was reportedly attacked, raped and killed on her way to the farm.

The convict was arraigned on a two-count charge. On the first count of rape, he was sentenced to life imprisonment, while he was found guilty of murder and thereby sentenced to death by hanging. Tometin who was said to have attended Apostlic Primary School at Ekore and dropped out in primary four for lack of fund, had ever since been engaged in farming. He was said to have settled in Ado-Ekiti through a relative, Mr. Bassey, in 2004.

Tometin said he was the second child of his parents but added that his mother had left his father to remarry and gave his mother’s name as Mrs. Adiya Erekunpon. The Judge, Justice Ilori Akindayo, said after all findings and facts on the issue, his view was that Exhibit C, F, and G-G3, which indicted the accused were very relevant to the case and he recorded it as full evidence. He therefore ruled that the accused person be hanged by the neck until he is dead.

Policeman Arrested For Selling Seized Motorcycle

A police corporal attached to the Ikorodu Divisional Police Station, Igbogbo Road, Ikorodu Area of Lagos State, South-west Nigeria, Goroye Folagbade, has been arrested and detained for allegedly stealing and selling a motorcycle belonging to Saheed Owolabi.
The Operation Officer of the Police Division, Ebuwa Vincent, was said to have seized the motorcycle from Saheed a few days after Christmas because he violated traffic law but could not produce the motorcycle afterwards, claiming that it had been taken to Alausa whereas the motorcycle had been stolen and sold.
After several failed attempts to recover the seized motorcycle, Saheed eventually found his motorcycle with another commercial motorcyclist, Ismail Olomitutu, at Anibaba area of Ikorodu on Thursday, 10 January, 2013 and he raised an alarm, saying he was the rightful owner of the motorcycle.
P.M.NEWS gathered that Ismail was interrogated before he eventually confessed that it was one of the station guards, Goroye Folagbade, who sold the motorcycle to him for N55,000.
Goroye later confessed to have committed the said criminal act when he was summoned by the Divisional Crime Officer, DCO of Igbogbo Divisional Headquarters after which he was arrested and detained at the same police station.
According to P.M.NEWS sources, “Goroye does not know how to ride a motorcycle so, he probably must have asked Ismail to come for the motorcycle inside the police station when no one was suspecting. Even the OPS in charge may have connived with him to dispatch the motorcycle because he lied to the owner of the motorcycle that it had been taken to Alausa.”
The police corporal who spoke with P.M.NEWS correspondents over the phone from detention, begged them not to write about the incident.
When Goroye was told that the Area Commander, ACP Amos Omuiyadun, was aware of the matter, he continued to plead with the reporters to help him.
“I’m ruined, please help me out. Don’t let me end here,” he said from the police cell.
Sources close to Goroye also revealed that the Police Corporal was planning his wedding introduction with fiancee who was said to be heavily pregnant.
The Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Police Command, DSP Ngozi Braide, when contacted, claimed not to be aware of the matter and promised to get back to our reporters. As at press time, the PPRO refused to give any reply to the message sent to her about the incident.

Police Recover 1,123 Improvised Explosive Devices In Kano

Police Recover 1,123 Improvised Explosive Devices In Kano
The Police Command in Kano State  said it recovered 1,123 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) between January and December 2012.
This is contained in a statement by the command's Public Relations Officer, ASP Magaji Majiya, in Kano.
According to the statement, 68 IEDs were successfully defused in different parts of the state by the Anti-Bomb Disposal Unit of the command during the period.
"Even though the early part of the year 2012 was characterised by terrorists attacks, the situation was immediately brought under control through concerted efforts of the police and other security agencies.''
The statement said the command killed 21 armed robbery suspects and arrested 217 others during the period. ''Similarly, the command has arrested two kidnap suspects and rescued two kidnapped victims in the state during the period.''
It said 108 suspects were charged with culpable homicide while 82 faced rape cases. It added that the command recovered 79 stolen and abandoned vehicles during the year.
The statement expressed appreciation to religious leaders and the public for their prayers which had "greatly helped the command against evil intention of criminals in the state".
The command also expressed gratitude to all those who assisted the police and other security agencies with timely information that led to successes in its operations.
"Our traditional institutions at ward and district levels and the Kano Emirate Council must be commended for the cooperation, support and assistance they have been rendering to this command at all times.''
The command also commended the state government for its general support in the provision of logistics and welfare "which greatly enhanced our operations".

18 human heads shipped from Rome held up at Chicago O'Hare International Airport

A shipment of 18 human heads, still covered in skin, was held at Chicago O'Hare International Airport by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.
Customs officials halted the heads for investigation before handing them over to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
"We are involved because they can't store them any longer," Tony Brucci, chief of investigations at the medical examiner's office told ABC News. "We'll be examining the heads in the autopsy room today, but there is no foul play suspected in the collection of the heads."
The heads were en route to a research facility near Chicago, but there was a glitch in the paperwork.
"They were all properly preserved and tagged for the purpose of anatomical study," Brucci said. "The paperwork just isn't properly done."
Researchers in Rome had been using the embalmed heads but shipped them to the United States for cremation at a facility near Chicago.
"The crematory has done nothing wrong. In fact, they were just here to hand all the paperwork over, and we're satisfied everything is on the up-and-up," Brucci told ABC News. "We are releasing them back to the crematory soon."
The somewhat grisly discovery apparently wasn't all that unusual. Doctors, medical facilities and research organizations often ship human body parts, said Brucci. This shipment raised flags because of the paperwork problem.
"This isn't as strange as it sounds," Brucci said. "People ship body parts to universities and hospitals all the time, we just don't usually hear much about it."
In 2010, a shipment of up to 60 human heads and parts of heads was seized at an airport in Arkansas.
Those heads were intended for medical training but were stopped in transit because of improper packaging and errors in the paperwork.

National Youth Service Corps: Some Graduate Members Can't Speak English

National Youth Service Corps: Some Graduate Members Can't Speak English
It has been revealed that some Nigerian graduates taking part in National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme can hardly communicate in English Language.
The Director-General of NYSC, Brig-Gen. Nnamdi Okore-Affia made the revelation in Ilorin, capital of Kwara state, while addressing the 2013 batch A pre-mobilisation workshop.
He said that the level of academic deficiency among corps members had heightened corps rejection and redundancy.
“Unfortunately too, we have corps members who can hardly communicate in English Language let alone being able to teach in the classrooms.
” This worrisome development has resulted in a situation whereby members of the public wrongly condemn the NYSC for the poor academic standards displayed by these corps members,’’ Okore- Affia said.
He said the inability of academic institutions to produce eligible corps members had become a herculean task for NYSC management.
He added, “going through the figures presented for mobilisation by Corps Producing Institutions (CPIs) in year 2012,it was discovered that many exceeded the admission quota approved by regulatory bodies by as much as 500 per cent in extreme cases.
Okore-Affia said many principals of schools and other employers were ejecting corps members posted to their schools and offices and stressed that it was difficult to even re-orientate such corps members.

Woman returns home at 2am to find husband raping 11 year old daughter

Woman returns home at 2am to find husband raping 11 year old daughter
A 32-YEAR-OLD man from Gwanda District has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for raping his 11-year-old stepdaughter.
The man, who cannot be named to protect the victim, yesterday pleaded guilty to the charge before Gwanda regional magistrate Mr Joseph Mabeza. On 14 January this year at about 9pm, the man arrived home drunk and found his wife already asleep with the complainant with whom they shared the bedroom.
He had a domestic dispute with his wife and threatened to assault her, which resulted in his wife leaving the house to seek refuge from nearby relatives. He also left the house and went to his aunt's place where he rested for a while. When he returned home at about midnight looking for his wife, he found that she had not returned and failed to locate her.
He then started harassing the complainant and her younger sister, who were sleeping in the bedroom asking them about the whereabouts of their mother. He then took advantage of the absence of his wife and ordered the stepdaughter to sleep on his bed, ordered her to undress and lie on the bed. She complied and he sexually abused her before threatening to axe her if she ever revealed what had happened to anyone.
After raping his stepdaughter, he slept in the same blankets with her. The matter came to light when his wife returned home at around 2am the following day and found him sleeping in the same blanket with his stepdaughter. On being questioned, the girl revealed that the stepfather had sexually abused her and the matter was reported to the police leading to the man's arrest.

They were charged with seven counts of assault, public indecency and another of attempted rape. The magistrate remanded the duo in custody till January 18 for trial.

The pair reportedly unbuttoned Masanzi's blouse and stripped her of her trousers. Richards and Shonhiwa were later arrested and taken to Makoni police station.

Nigerian Army Goes To War In Mali

Nigerian Army Goes To War In Mali
Nigeria yesterday commenced deployment of troops as part of its contribution to the Africa-led International Support to Mali codenamed AFISMA to enforce peace in the West African country which had almost fallen to the rebels. The rebels are mainly Al Qaeda and Islamist jihadist groups which had seized almost half of the country. Last week, President Dionconda Traore had cried to the United Nations (UN) to help save the nation.

France, Mali’s colonial master, responded with the deployment of ground troops, armoured tanks and fighter jets as they bombarded rebel strongholds. Other countries including the European Union (EU) are pledging men and material support. Yesterday, Nigeria joined the international community to stop the march of terrorists in the region by supplying 906 soldiers.

In fact, President Goodluck Jonathan said yesterday that Nigeria is facing daunting security challenges and given its proximity to the Sahel region, the Mali crisis, if not brought under control, may spill over to Nigeria and other West African countries with negative consequences on our collective security, political stability and development efforts. He said: “ As a responsible member of the international community and given my recent experiences with insurgency and terrorist activities especially in the northern part of the country, I felt compelled to urgently approve the deployment of Nigerian troops.”

The Senate, also yesterday supported the President’s deployment of soldiers which also include 66 Air Force officers, who departed from Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-General Azubuike Ihejirika yesterday charged the troops to show exemplary leadership at the mission area. Addressing them at the Nigerian Army Peace Keeping Centre (NAPKC), Jaji near Kaduna before their departure, Gen. Ihejirika told the officers and men to comport themselves properly and show commitment and loyalty to all, as well as apply utmost discipline in the discharge of their responsibilities.

He told the NIBATT 1 AFISMA officers and soldiers drawn from the 333 Battalion, who went through pre-deployment training at the NAPKC, that their welfare will be treated with utmost priority. According to the Army chief, “I want to assure you of the government’s support while carrying out your assignment, be it operational, logistics or administrative, remain steadfast throughout and at all times, and exhibit high standard of discipline which is the bedrock of the Army profession.

Earlier in his address, the Commandant of the NAPKC, Major-General John Samuel Zaruwa, assured that the training of the 333 Battalion was specifically tailored to suit the operational environment and therefore, expressed optimism that the battalion was capable of conducting the operation and accomplish their assigned tasks. The commandant, however, reiterates that peace enforcement was much more difficult than peace-keeping, and urged the troops to practise the commitment and dedication displayed while undergoing the pre-deployment training to make Nigeria proud.

Rising from executive session, Senate yesterday backed President Jonathan in the deployment just as it also directed its Committees on Defence and National Security and Intelligence to proceed to Mali. Senate based its support on Section 5 (5) of the 1999 Constitution, which stipulates that only the consent of the Senate is needed in limited combat operation.

This position is contrary to section 4 (5) of the Constitution which President Jonathan cited in a correspondence to the Upper Legislative Chamber. In the January 16 letter to Senate President David Mark, Jonathan urged the Senate to exercise its powers under section 4 (5) of the Constitution and consent to the deployment of 1,200 soldiers to service in AFISMA on limited combat duties. Similarly, the two standing committees have also been mandated by the Senate to “ensure that Nigerian troops are well-equipped to carry out the roles they are to undertake in Mali.”

Earlier, Mark read a letter from the President where he hinged the deployment of troops to the “political and security crisis in Mali and its grave consequences on the security situation and stability in the Sahel and the entire West African sub-region.” Supporting Jonathan’s request, Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, noted that Nigeria cannot afford to stand aloof as events in Mali have grave repercussions for Nigeria. “What’s happening in Mali has great security implication for Nigeria. Like America, we have to take the war to their homes.

Nigeria should do this; in the best interest of Nigeria, take the war to the home of the terrorists. I commend the action taken by France because the insurgents were 400 kilometres away from Bamako when France intervened.” Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN), urged the Presidency to go beyond sending troops, noting that Nigeria should learn from super-powers who utilise such missions for national economic gains. Said Ndoma-Egba: “This is the time when adventurous military men should know that their days are long gone. Nigeria made a lot of sacrifices for our neighbours but what have we got in return?

There’s a gap in our foreign policy; we can’t continue to be big brother when it comes to sacrifice. We must have benefits in return.” Chairman of the Navy Committee, Chris Anyanwu, however, lent her support to Nigeria looking beyond the peace-keeping mission and ensure that Nigeria gets more in return from its support to that country. “I support the President’s request. What he wants to do is absolutely necessary and inevitable on two sides: one, we are a member of ECOWAS and secondly, we are feeling the heat of the insurgents.

“We don’t want Nigeria to be the centre of war. As we go to Mali, we should know what we are going to do there. We should not repeat the mistake we made in other countries in Mali. Nigeria should stop playing Father-Xmas; we should get strategic thinkers and re-think our foreign policy.” Senate President Mark said approval of Jonathan’s request is predicated on section 5 (5) of the Constitution which supersedes section 5 (4) which only mandates the President to notify both houses of the National Assembly when he wants to deploy Nigerian troops for war. “The request is on limited combat operation in Mali.

We are big brother in Africa (and) whatever happens in Africa, we will definitely be concerned… “I believe that the request is in order. One important thing is this: because of the nature of the crisis in Mali and the characters involved, if we don’t intervene, European countries and African countries will definitely ask us to intervene. “The insurgents do not only want to take over Bamako, they want to spread their tentacles beyond Mali…

The Committees on Defence and National Security and Intelligence should ensure that our troops are well-equipped to carry out the roles they are to undertake…” Mark said. Meanwhile, 66 Nigerian Air Force contingents yesterday departed for Mali. They were air-lifted from the Port Harcourt International Airport by an Air Force aircraft marked NAF 952 at about 10am. Addressing the troops including two women, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badey, urged them to be focused, maintain professionalism and make Nigeria proud.

He reminded them that the assignment was one of the President’s mandate to provide troops for peace keeping. He urged them to represent the nation well and maintain the virtues Nigerian soldiers, who were known for their track records in several peace missions. Addressing newsmen, Air Marshal Badey said the operation was the initial movement of the 1,200 troops pledged by the President. Badey said that Nigeria had two-fold targets which were to eliminate the Islamist rebels and to ensure that they did not enter the country.

Jonathan dares not come to my church – Bakare

Pastor Tunde Bakare, Senior Pastor of the Latter Rain Assembly and former running mate of Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari in the last presidential election, speaks with KUNLE ADEYEMI and ADEOLA BALOGUN on some burning national issues

One year after the fuel subsidy protests, when you look back, would you say the protests achieved their goals?
When there are clear goals and objectives for any movement or protest, then you have the opportunity of judging whether those goals are attained or accomplished. We didn’t just rush out; if you recall, the increase in petrol pump price took place on January 1, 2012. Like a sadist, the President gave us a cause to be sorrowful on the first day of the year; even those who didn’t even have vehicles of their own and had to pay through their noses to move from one place to the other. The Save Nigeria Group sat down to analyse the situation and joined the protest in Ojota with its allies. There were pockets of protests here and there; there was a general strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress; then we sat down and set the objectives clearly: that the increase in pump price was not our problem but corruption. We said the time had come for us to educate and enlighten our citizens and unblock their minds as to the root cause of the continuous increase in petrol pump price all the time and the affliction and oppression inflicted on the people of this country. That’s why we came out with the watchword, “Kill Corruption and not Nigerians.” And I leave it to you as journalists to see whether or not we accomplished our objectives because immediately we began to hammer that, probe after probe, live on television came out. There is no Nigerian anywhere in this country and in the Diaspora that does not know that filthiness is in our garments. Corruption is the bane and we have unmasked the masquerade.
It was alleged that you led the protest because your party lost the election to the President’s party.
You cannot tell clueless people not to reason wrongly. Did all the people who participated in that protest run for an election? All the musicians that came there, all the artistes that came there without taking a penny from us, did they run for any election? And even if you are going to judge me that it was because you rigged an election that you said we lost, that led to the protest, did I ask you to increase the pump price? And if you are to judge me, judge me by my overall character; did I stand for you when you were being oppressed, Mr. President? Was I a politician when we led and took to the streets in Abuja and Lagos where we stood against every form of oppression and injustice because injustice to one is injustice to all? Were we sponsored by politicians when we took to the streets in January, 2010 after the prolonged illness of (Umaru) Yar’Adua? You can’t help people who don’t engage their brain to think; they are entitled to their opinion. But let me tell you the truth, there was no political motivation of any kind to that protest. We rose to protest an injustice being meted out to a people deserving not only respect, but those whose welfare should be the primary concern of a good government. Everybody is aware now that somebody is watching somebody. With all the exposure of corruption in high places, everyone is careful and they are so scared. In spite of threatening to increase the price of PMS, they couldn’t, although they are doing it illegally by allowing people to sell at any price they like. But it is still illegal and that is why I dared them three days ago to come out and increase the petrol price without cushioning the effect and providing alternative for the people. They will know that it is for the dog to wag the tail, not the tail to wag the dog; people will tell them enough is enough.
Don’t you think that 2015 is still far away for campaigning to have started?
They have signalled the campaign by going to kneel down before Pastor Adeboye (General Overseer, Redeemed Christian Church of God). See, I am not saying that pastors should not pray for presidents, that man was representing an office; a whole nation crumbling before men of God because of political advantage they think they can get. And if the prayer will bail him out, let us wait and see. The truth is who is preparing for 2015, which faction of the PDP? Is it the (Olusegun) Obasanjo faction? Or IBB faction? Or Jonathan faction? The governors’ faction? Because PDP is a house divided against itself; it’s a chicken that has begun to eat its own intestines. By going to kneel down in the open before the pastor, the man (Jonathan) did not even recognise the dignity of his office. If it were a private thing, it is okay for you to crawl or kneel but it is a whole nation. That office has been diminished by a man who does not know the worth of it and does not deserve to stay there for one more day.
What then should be the role of religious leaders like you in the affairs of the nation?
I am not a religious leader. I don’t believe in religion; religion is deadly. Jesus Christ did not start a religion here. He began a relationship with God. Let’s separate the two. Religious leaders don’t think any more, they lose their brain. Paul said, I speak the words of truth and reason. What is the impact of the church in this country other than to pray for men who have stolen the treasury and wealth of the nation and coming back to give us different kinds of gifts; giving us jets and all kinds of things that will silence us so that we cannot speak the truth to power? I know the church that Jesus Christ is building will continue to wax stronger but this synagogue of Satan will fold up soon. I hate religion with passion.
How will you assess the Jonathan administration so far?
Under Jonathan’s leadership, Nigeria as a whole has become a titanic ship on sail to hit the iceberg and sink. Right-thinking people must rise to rescue the helm of that ship from his (Jonathan’s) hand before he wrecks the entire nation. We have promoted men who have no mental capacity to do what we ask them to do. At a meeting we had on Monday to mark the anniversary of the protest, the Chairman of Punch Editorial Board brought this to my consciousness by describing leadership of Nigeria as inept. He said we have put men who have been promoted beyond their mental capacity in position. That is our problem.
Many people believe that the PDP has become an albatross to Nigerians and that is why there is a clamour for an alliance among the opposition parties in order to wrest power from the ruling party. What do you think has been hampering such alliance?
You have put me on the spot and I will only be truthful. In order to steer the ship of Nigeria aright, there must be a handshake across the Niger; between the North and the South. But it must be of like minds; the best of the North and the best of the South. How that will take place is a function of many factors. An alliance is not the way forward. In a presidential system of government, there is no opposition; it’s winner takes all. If the party in power has a majority in the National Assembly, they don’t need anybody. That is the weakness of the presidential system of government. Each time they talk of opposition, I think we are so much inundated by our past experience with the parliamentary system where the prime minister can be removed from the parliament and nothing will happen because the system allows it. But the presidential system does not brook any opposition, except only when they don’t have the majority. I think the way forward is a merger of all the so-called opposition parties especially the Action Congress of Nigeria, All Nigeria Peoples Party and the Congress for Progressive Change. But I realised recently when the ACN said PDP is a party of rogues and thieves and criminals, the PDP replied that there are more criminals in the ACN than the PDP and there was no response thereafter. I read all that in the newspapers. If there is going to be a merger, between who and who-between rogues and criminals? Can light and darkness co-exist? Let’s pray that men and women of goodwill will rise and do the needful. However, having said all that, I am of the firm belief and conviction that there will be no election in 2015. I am of the firm belief that this house of cards will collapse before 2015. As it is now, what we have does not have what it takes to drag Nigeria along; and anything can happen anytime from now. And I pray that it would be what would be for the benefit of the entire nation. Each time we have spoken that way, some have thought we are calling for the military to take over. What did the military do for the nation before? Don’t let me be misunderstood, except we have a kind of Jehu revolution, where the worshippers of bell and the worshippers of the altar of greed are all dealt with as it happened in Ghana. Then, there may be some hope there. Our people may revolt, which can happen so unexpectedly. Remember what happened when the Shah of Iran ran away from that country and the Arab Spring? It would be worse here because they have pushed people beyond limit. Look at the level of insecurity, daylight robbery; you are coming out of the church and they are pointing a gun at you. North is not safe, there is Boko Haram; South-East is not safe, there is kidnapping; South is not safe, there is pipeline vandalism. And fire is now ravaging everywhere. People have been pushed beyond limit and there may be a people’s revolt. Beyond this, there is God almighty, who may say the cries of the people have come up to Him, enough is enough.
When you as a man of God says there will be no election in 2015, is that as a result of a vision or what?
Leave that to me but by the time this nation is 100 years old in 2014, God will answer the prayer of the people of God and there will be a new beginning. The madness that is going on everywhere now is that God is hardening the heart of Pharaoh.
The President warned a few days ago against statements that could destabilise the country such as this.
Is the nation not destabilised already? What have we said that will destabilise the country? Let’s call a spade a spade and not an agricultural implement.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also warned against a revolution recently going by the way things are going…
He said the truth but he would be the first victim that it would consume because he caused the problem; by forcing the weak and the sick on the nation. A few days ago, Adamu Ciroma came out to say that Obasanjo knew that the late Umaru Yar’Adua was sick. Just wait, the result is about to happen. He did that as a way of revenging on Nigeria for the collapse of his third term agenda but Obasanjo will be the first victim of the revolution. I presented a lecture on Sunday that Obasanjo had the greatest opportunity to put Nigeria in proper shape and to leave a legacy for generations unborn. But he chose not to do that. I had the privilege of launching a book in honour of a venerable man, Chief Akin Olugbade, an Owu, to mark his centenary birthday if he were alive. I said Owu as a kingdom had produced angels in human flesh like the late Akin Olugbade, whose generosity and philanthropy benefitted a person like me. I went there to say that this is a return on investment and I gave the little that I had. If Obasanjo dares, let both of us walk through Itoku Market in Abeokuta even as an Owu man without any aide, or the streets of Sokoto among the almajiris. That is why I told them that Owu kingdom has produced angels and demons such as Obasanjo, who incidentally is called Ebora Owu. Ebora means demon and demons are to be exorcised. Our job is to cast out demons of Owu and that we would do by God’s grace.
How do you see the rift between Obasanjo and Jonathan; probably Obasanjo has realised his mistakes and now thinks it is better to fight on the side of the people?
Obasanjo does not realise anything. I think Jonathan has surpassed him in misgovernance and he is frightened. It is only a thief that knows the footprint of another thief on a rock. How did he come by his big house? How much was Obasanjo worth when he left the prison, how much is he worth now? How did he come about his big investments? How much was he paid as President of Nigeria. Let him explain. What we have is a government of crooks by crooks.
In the last election, you tried politics. What should we expect now?
I didn’t try politics. I was invited to assist a person whom I thought was a honest man and would be surrounded by good people and then we would fight corruption. That was the only reason. I was a running mate; I wasn’t a member of any party. I was invited but I am back in my element to keep doing what I am doing. That ended there; if the opportunity comes to serve my country in any capacity, I will but I am not forming any party.
What did you see in Maj.-Gen.Mohammadu Buhari before you joined him?
His integrity and his anti-corruption stance stood him out. He is the only head of state alive who made the public statement that in his entire public service career, as a governor, as a commissioner (now minister), as a commandant of different army formations and as a head of state, he never touched one penny in the public treasury; that he can account for everything God has given him. His mother’s house was built through a loan both in Daura and in Kaduna. The one in Lagos, he had to sell to fund the one he took a loan to build in Abuja because he didn’t know how to steal. He is very forthright and honest; that’s all I saw and if we can surround such a man with people who have the capability and the capacity to run the state and the treasury is safe and there is no more stealing and Nigeria is no longer haemorrhaging, we can salvage it. That was why we assembled a change team that we thought would be allowed but they rigged the election.
Some people believe that if somebody like you becomes the President of Nigeria, there will be more evidence of despotic actions in governance. How would you react to this?
The only way to judge that is to come to a church I have headed for more than 20 years and see whether there is any evidence of despotism. Then you come to my house and see my wife and children to see if there is an evidence of despotic actions. I am not a despot and in fact, how can you be a despot in a democratic setting? Don’t forget I am a trained lawyer; I would not violate the rule of law. No true leader should be a despot.
Apart from corruption, security is another challenge facing the country and the Presidency has had to change the head of police several times because of this. So far, how would you assess the present IG, Muhammed Abubakar?
There is nobody you put there who can accomplish anything about insecurity because the fish starts smelling from the head. If you say corruption is not the problem, what leads to insecurity if not corruption? The IG can give orders but the men at the toll gates and roadblocks are there to perpetuate corruption. Corruption and violence are Siamese twins and in Genesis, God said He was grieved in His heart that He created man, that the earth was corrupt and there was violence everywhere. You can’t find corruption and not see violence. I do not approve of what Boko Haram is doing but if you grant amnesty to those who were vandalising the pipelines because of fighting for what they claimed was legitimately theirs, and Boko Haram are saying their governors are not taking care of them, who are you to judge them? Why have they not been able to fix the problem?
But it has always been argued that Boko Haram is faceless and so it would be difficult to engage its elements…
Boko Haram faceless and yet Obasanjo met with them? I don’t know them but the President of Nigeria said Boko Haram members were in his cabinet. Who are those he alleged were in his cabinet, are they ghosts? What led to the removal of the late Gen. (Andrew) Azazi as National Security Adviser? They are totally insincere. There is PDP Boko Haram. Let them not fool you. They arrested some people in Jos and elsewhere, why have they not been able to prosecute anyone with all the arrests? Do you think it is the Boko Haram that started in the Borno area that are the ones planting sophisticated bombs everywhere now? Please let’s think; there is security Boko Haram, there is political Boko Haram and there is criminal Boko Haram.
Recently the government came out to say electricity has improved a bit but the way you are talking, it’s like it has not done anything.
If a man told me a lie yesterday and I believed him but it turned out to be false; and he told me a lie a day before, how long am I to continue to believe him? Nigerians have been told of improved electricity in recent months but how many parts of the country have you travelled to? They are putting electricity where you make noise so that you don’t bother them. I still burn diesel in my house everyday up till now and my budget for diesel both in the church and in my house has increased with all the noise they are making. And by the way, how much have they invested in electricity generation and how much electricity have they produced?
But the government has been trying to put electricity generation into private hands for improvement.
I have had the opportunity of living in both Britain and America for six years each and I never met the electricity officials. All I had to do was to pay my bills; that was all. All the privatisation noise they are making is fraught with deep-seated corruption. They sell everything to themselves. They have been mentioning privatisation when I was still in my mother’s womb. Once upon a time, there was ECN and there was stable electricity. They are insincere and they sell everything to themselves.
How do you see the politicking involved in the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway project, where a lot of lives have been lost? Soon after the contract was withdrawn from Dr.Wale Babalakin, he was arrested for alleged money laundering.
Evil is self-destruct. That’s all I see there. If Babalakin is being tried for something, the question is, is it true? If it is false, then the trial will fall on its face. I have told you that it is only the thief that knows how to trace the footsteps of another on a rock. They know what they are doing. If you remain in our camp and you don’t attack us, you remain our friend. Babalakin used to be the solicitor for Obasanjo, have they fallen out? Was there anything between Babalakin and the minister and is there a fall out? But the truth is, can they come and revoke a contract that I have not seen or can they come and charge me for money laundering? My accounts are in the open and if you access them, you will see that it has been regular. And every business I have done, I have gone to the banks for legitimate loans and I have paid back those loans. If you have done no evil, you need not fear no evil. So, if Babalakin has done no evil, no evil will befall him. But if he has done it, then let him find a way of reaching out to them before they wreck him completely because they are vicious. What is going on on that road is the failure of the entire nation. Leadership has failed Nigerians. That is the main road that connects the South and the North and any serious government should have done something about it. I am aware that the South-West governors showed an interest and met with the President but I don’t know why they were not allowed to do it. There is more to it than we ordinary citizens know.
As kinsmen, people would expect a kind of rapport between you and Obasanjo but you are one of his critics. Is there something personal?
Apart from answering questions about him in interviews, I don’t think or talk about him at all because he does not even occur in my thinking. If Obasanjo is my kinsman, does it mean that if he does evil, I should keep quiet? I have no personal hatred for him. Let me tell you something, I don’t know whether he knows but I am saying the truth and it can be verified. When he was in prison, one of the pastors that went to minister to him, I sent him. He was a member of our network. When he was in prison, two of his children were brought here because their school fees could not be paid by one of his wives, I paid the fees. I have nothing against him.
On a personal note, do you at times regret leaving the pulpit and venturing into politics?
Look at me, as the Lord lives and when the opportunity presents itself, because of my interest in an orderly society, I will do it again. I have no regret. When good men leave politics alone, evil men will continue to traumatise the nation. And by the way, I never left the pulpit, in all the months of electioneering, I was absent in church only one Sunday because it caught up with me in Borno and I couldn’t get back. Gen. Buhari knew that by Friday night, or latest Saturday morning, I must be back in Lagos to feed the flock.
Supposing the President chooses to come and fellowship at your church, what would you do?
Let him try it. Jonathan dares not and if he does, he will sit at the back.
What is the Nigeria of your dream?
The Nigeria that works in my lifetime, that is the Nigeria of my dream. My ears have heard about this great nation, my eyes will see it in my own lifetime. I am not an ambitious person and that is why I can come back here.

House of Representatives Probes N2.1bn Missing From Mint From Production Of N1,000 Notes

House of Representatives Probes N2.1bn Missing From Mint From Production Of N1,000 Notes
The House of Representatives thursday mandated a special ad hoc committee to investigate the alleged disappearance of N2.1 billion from the vaults of the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company (NSPMC).

The House in plenary decided to investigate the missing of the N2.1 billion from the NSPMC’s vaults after considering a motion sponsored by 61 legislators.

Chairman, House Committee on Rules and Business, Hon. Albert Sam-Tsokwa, who led the debate on the matter, recalled that the amount got missing in December last year.

According to him, the missing funds, consisting of newly printed N1,000 notes mysteriously disappeared during production, adding that that was the second time such a large sum of money had allegedly disappeared from the company due to security breaches.

He said: “We are disturbed that there has been conflicting information on the actual amount of money declared missing. While the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said it was about N2 billion, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company (NSPMC) has claimed that the amount was N1.5 million and the media adviser to the managing director claimed that the actual amount missing was N900,000.

“He also claimed that it was due to a security breach and that a security operative was arrested in Lagos with the said sum of N900,000. It is also important to point out that about nine workers of the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company were summarily dismissed from the establishment after news of the theft became public knowledge.”

The House later adopted the motion and mandated the ad hoc committee to investigate the matter and make its findings known in four weeks.

Boko Haram Leader Imam Abubakar Shekau Shot, Escapes To Mali

Boko Haram Leader Imam Abubakar Shekau Shot, Escapes To Mali
There were indications yesterday in Abuja, that the leader of the Boko Haram Islamic sect, Imam Abubakar Shekau was wounded during a gun battle with security men recently.
Sources said in Abuja that security agencies traced the whereabouts of Shekau, who succeeded late Mohammed Yusuf as leader of the sect to Mali, where he escaped to after sustaining injuries during a gun duel with soldiers of the Joint Task Force, JTF, a.k.a Operation Restore Order.

Sources told Saturday Vanguard that the Federal Government approved the deployment of 1,200 soldiers apparently because of the need to arrest the wounded Boko Haram leader.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika who addressed officers and soldiers of the Nigerian army shortly before they were airlifted to Mali Thursday in Kaduna, asked them to be extra vigilant as there are indications that some terrorists had sneaked into the country with the aim of causing havoc.
Ihejirika however, pointed out that the Nigerian Army was not resting on its oars as the war against terror was being won.
Saturday Vanguard learnt that the battle between the JTF and the sect members took place at Gao city, in the heart of Northern Mali presently under the control of Tuareg militants.
It was further learnt that Shekau, who is having N50million ransom  hanging on his head from the Federal Government, was ferried to Mali through one of the porous routes in the vast Nigerian border  without Customs and Immigration authorities getting wind of it.
Saturday Vanguard was told that while the Boko Haram leader was being given medication in Gao, the foreign sponsors of the sect’s activities in Nigeria, were busy, using his name to indoctrinate, train and recruit more members for the sect.
Shekau was said to have been shot at a checkpoint when he reportedly attempted to deceive operatives of the JTF by posing as a nomadic Fulani who was returning from a journey. However, on approach of the vehicle conveying him and members of his sect, ‘’a hot exchange of gunfire ensued as the sect members started firing at the soldiers who equally returned fire for fire.’’
During the crossfire, he and two other sect members with him escaped with gunshot wounds while two members of the sect were killed on the spot. Some AK 47 rifles were recovered from the vehicle.
While stating that most of the weaponry including IEDS recovered from Boko Haram members have been traced to the weaponry used during the Libyan uprising against late Libyan leader, Gaddafi, the source said Nigerian security agencies believed that the more sophisticated and deadly weaponry had gotten to the hands of sect members but they are unable to operate them because they are not trained for it.
The source cited the discovery of Shekau’s hideout and the training base for Boko Haram sect members to unleash terror on Nigerians as a further justification of the action of the federal government to deploy 1, 200 troops as well as Airforce fighter and transport aircraft to Mali to help flush out the Tuareg militants and their sponsors.
Saturday Vanguard further gathered that security has been beefed up along the Nigerian Army First Mechanized Division and the Third Armoured Division’s areas of responsibilities with the deployment of soldiers at the borders to complement the work of other security agencies following the escalation of the Mali crisis with a view to checkmating infiltrations into the country by terrorists.
Last December, a total sum of N290 million ransom was approved for anyone who could assist in locating Imam Abubakar Shekau and 18 other leaders of Boko Haram.
A release by the JTF listed the wanted Boko Haram leaders to include five members of the Shurra (the highest decision-making body of the sect) Committee and 19 of their commanders.
The five members of the Shurra Committee of the sect, including Imam Abubakar Shekau whose ramsom was N50 million, and Habibu Yusuf (a.k.a Asalafi), Khalid Albarnawai, Momodu Bama and Mohammed Zangina. Apart from Imam Shekau whose ransom was put at N50 million, the other Shurra members’ ransom was put at N25million each.
A ransom of N10 million each was put on the Boko Haram Commanders including, Abu Saad, Abba Kaka, Abdulmalik Bama, Umar Fulata, Alhaji Mustapha, (Massa) Ibrahim and Abubakar Suleiman-Habu a.k.a Khalid.
Other commanders also included Hassan Jazair,  Ali Jalingo,  Alhaji Musa Modu, Bashir Aketa, Abba Goroma, Ibrahim Bashir,   Abubakar Zakariya  and Tukur Ahmed Mohammed.
The JTF statement on the N290 million ransom then, reads in part; “They are wanted in connection with terrorist activities, particularly in the North East zone of Nigeria that led to the killings, bombings and assassination of some civilians, religious leaders, traditional rulers, businessmen, politicians, civil servants and security personnel, among others.
They are also wanted for arson and destruction of properties worth millions of naira. Therefore, anyone with information that will lead to the arrest of any of the listed terrorists or more will have the rewards (placed on them) as stated.’’

20 year old Second wife burns first wife's 2-year-old baby to death with paraffin stove during a fight

A two-year-old toddler died during a domestic dispute pitting the mother and her husband's second wife in Chinamhora. The toddler's mother is now battling for her life at Parirenyatwa hospital after sustaining serious burns.Enia Sigauke (20) who is the second wife had a misunderstanding with her husband's first wife Alice Chikwanda (23). During the altercation, Sigauke allegedly kicked a paraffin stove, which Chikwanda was using, resulting in paraffin being splashed on the toddler, who immediately caught fire and died.
Sigauke on Wednesday appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe charged with two counts of murder and attempted murder. She was remanded in custody to January 29. Mr Mahwe advised her to apply for bail at the High Court due to the gravity of the offences.
Prosecutor Miss Junior Mugebe alleges that on January 12, Sigauke who stays in Harare went to her husband's first wife Chikwanda's house in Chinamhora. The visit followed a misunderstanding during a phone conversation.
Upon arrival Sigauke found Chikwanda cooking using a paraffin stove while in the company of her daughter Nokutenda Mucharonza.
The two had a heated argument and Sigauke allegedly kicked the paraffin stove resulting in paraffin being splashed on the toddler. The stove burst and the whole house was engulfed in fire and the toddler immediately caught fire.
