Thousands venture to Kebbi to grace “Healing water”

Unguwar Yari village in Jega Local Government Area of Kebbi is witnessing an influx of people seeking cure of their ailments with the use of underground water believed to have “healing powers’’.

The council Chairman, Alhaji Haruna Mai-Jega, told Journalists on Monday that many people from all walks of life were visiting the village in search of healing through drinking and bathing with the water.
“The council has obtained clearance from health officials who conducted tests and confirmed that the water is free of diseases.
“We have no intention of preventing people who believe in the healing powers of the water to make use of it.
“The council will not be a hindrance to those who choose to use the water, but we will ensure there is no lawlessness in the process,’’ he said.
Meanwhile, the people of Unguwar Yari have fenced the source of the “miracle” water.
A guide, Malam Yaro Unguwar-Yari, said the council had also provided different sizes of plastic containers for people who wish to fetch the water.
He said that the community had appointed a monitoring committee to ensure that the water was not sold to people.
Conducting a NAN correspondent round the area, he said: “the water was discovered by a grandmother who was in searching of medicinal herbs for her sick grandchild’’.
“The news of the healing water spread when the woman revealed that on drinking from the underground water, her grandchild was healed instantly,’’ he said.
He Unguwar-Yari said that between 40 and 50 vehicles conveying people to the village on a daily basis.
A farmer, Malam Usman Dan-Malam, claimed that the water healed pains in his leg.
Another beneficiary, Malam Yahaya Sarki, said he prayed over the water and gave it to his child and immediately she stopped bed-wetting.
A man, Mai Akwai Abubakar, said that he was healed of his ailment after drinking the water, adding: “I have sent two 25-litre containers with the water to my friends’’

Former Borno state governor, Senator Ali Modu Sherrif has added another airplane to his fleet with his latest acquisition being a new Gulfstream jet G650 model that cost him an estimated $72 million (N11.5 billion) and topped the chart of top 10 private jet owners in Nigeria.

Registered in Dubai with special specifications, the aircraft is the fourth in his fleet, as he already has three old Dornier aircraft which he acquired from Aero Contractors at an estimated $3 million (N480 million).

The actions of the former governor, who has been alleged to fund the terrorist Boko Haram sect in North-eastern Nigeria, on the new aircraft, has been described by a Nigerian pilot as unpatriotic.

According to him, by registering the aircraft overseas, Sheriff had denied Nigeria taxes and import duty on the aircraft.

No Nigerian pilot or engineer would also be employed to operate or work on the aircraft because with the foreign registration, only pilots and engineers licensed in the United Arab Emirates would be authorised to operate and service the aircraft.

“By registering the aircraft overseas, he has avoided tax and import duty, which he should pay to a country where he is a citizen and from which he made the money which he now spends on a foreign crew,” he said.

According to US-based Forbes magazine, the Gulfstream G650 has an order book of 200 customers throughout the world.

Gulfstream described the aircraft as ultra-high-speed, ultra-long-range business jet and the gold standard in business aviation.

The model was introduced in 2008 with a capacity for eight passengers and a crew of four on nonstop legs of 7,000 nautical miles (12,964 km) for standard configuration.

“That means it will link Dubai with New York and London with Buenos Aires. With its powerful Rolls-Royce BR725 engines, the G650 will cover shorter distances at a speed of Mach 0.925.

No traditional business jet will take you closer to the speed of sound,” Gulfstream said on its website.

OPINION: THIS MADNESS IN THE NAME OF CONVOYS MUST STOP

The convoy was intimidating, People scampered for safety, other road users veered off the road in what looked like a scene in Hollywood movies, if you thought it was a war scene, you were wrong! Because making use of that narrow way that day was not a military head of state but an un-elected wife of a political office holder!

In a story that circulated on the internet recently, one Ola Adeosun narrated how he became victim of the over-zealous security officials of the Oyo State Governor just because he happened to share the road while the Governor’s convoy at that time. More worrisome was his allegation that the show of brutality and naked force was supervised by a senior police officer.

According to him, for daring to challenge the security officials on why his vehicle was hit, he was beaten blue-black, dragged on the floor and hurled into a police truck where he was transported to the police station. This is one of such executive lawlessness that has become part of our political space.

Alas, the whole Nation was to be put in mourning mood days later when a vehicle in the convoy of the Governor of Kogi State, Idris Wada crashed into a Toyo Hiace bus conveying an erstwhile President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof Festus Iyayi to the proposed ASUU NEC Meeting somewhere along the Lokoja-Abuja expressway killing him on the spot while two other ASUU chiefs were critically injured.

According to the Kogi state sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Mr Olatunde Motajo, the recklessness of the Governor’s convoy drivers led to the fatal accident that claimed Iyayi’s life. According to him, the last vehicle in the convoy of the Governor made ‘’wrongful overtaking’’ thereby ramming into the bus conveying the ASUU chiefs.

Intimidations of the Nigerian citizenry by the political class as well as influential public figures when making use of our roads is fast becoming a shame that we should be ashamed of. Ours is about the only country in a democratic setting where political office holders not only use public funds to acquire excessive security vehicles but also use same to oppress its citizenry. The sight of drivers in the convoy of politicians, escorts, bank officials and the ‘fat-cats’ in the society breaking traffic rules is a regular occurrence that not only elicits anger from the citizenry but also cause accidents that claim lives.

In a bid to impress their masters, over-zealous ‘monsters’ in uniforms intimidate other road users whenever they make use of the roads. They flagrantly abuse the rights of other road users, forcing other drivers off the road while those who have the guts to argue with them over their right to also use the road are molested and physically abused. It is important for us to remind ourselves that this is a democratic setting where the Leaders have an obligation to serve the people. The government has a sacred to duty to ensure the security and welfare of the citizenry (the very essence of Government), it is thus unthinkable that these same people who should be the ones protecting us are sending a lot of us to our graves prematurely

Just when one thought the Iyayi’s case would be a call for caution for political office holders, another tragedy happened on Wednesday, less than twenty-four hours after the accident that claimed Iyayl’s life. According to The PUNCH, a convoy of seven vehicles consisting of three escort vans containing Policemen caused an accident in Lagos. It was reported that the convoy connected the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway recklessly without checking for oncoming vehicles, and unfortunately a Tipper moving on high speed in a bid to avoid the convoy swerved of the road and lost control killing two persons and injuring several others.

The recklessness of drivers attached to political office holders have caused untold hardship and pain to many families. The recklessness of an individual has caused the indefinite suspension of the National Executive Council ( NEC)meeting of ASUU, where votes to end the over four months ASUU strike was expected to have been taken, thus shattering the hopes of million of Nigeria who hoped that the industrial action would be suspended this week.

Public officials should as a matter of urgency reduce the long list of vehicles in their convoys, it is totally unnecessary, apart from the fact that their maintenance amounts to a waste of tax payers money, it is a show of intimidation on hapless citizens who service these vehicles with their taxes. Political office holders and all those who are entitled to usage of escorts should curb the excessiveness of their security details, after-all, the drivers and security escorts do all these to impress them.

It should be noted that the drivers of these vehicles are not immune to prosecution and so the Traffic compliance agencies should step-up their job and bring erring drivers to book. Also, we should strengthen our Traffic laws such that any offender, no matter how highly placed is prosecuted dully. All these will put recalcitrant drivers in check and ensure that sanity returns to our roads.

In as much as the political office holders do nor repair our roads and make it motor able enough, then we should all ‘enjoy’ the hold-up and the attendant hardship after-all none of us has two heads.
This carnage in the name of convoys must stop and the time to end it is now!

Professor Festus Iyayi will always be remembered for his doggedness, activism and the struggle for the revitilization of our public institutions.
He has left an indelible imprint in the sands of time and his legacies will continue to live on. RIP, Prof.

Three Nigerians who tried to trick their way to a new life in the UK through sham marriage and illegal employment have been jailed.

Henrietta Samugana, 32, Oluwatobi Adegbenro, 36, and his brother Olaseni Adegbenro, 30, were sentenced to 12 months, eight months and 12 months respectively when they appeared in court yesterday.

All three had overstayed their visas, but Samugana had used a fake Dutch ID card in the name of Carina Centeno to fraudulently get employment as a support worker at a care home.

Later investigations found that she had used the false identity to marry Olaseni, and made three requests to the Home Office asking that her husband be granted UK residency – all were refused.

An operation involving police and immigration enforcement officers was launched, and they discovered a fraudulent UK driving license in the name of Oluwatobi Adegbenro at the trio’s flat in Yunus Khan Close, Walthamstow, where all three were living.

Robert Braybrook, from Home Office immigration enforcement, said: “These people treated the UK’s immigration laws with contempt, overstaying their visas and then attempting to use a variety of illegal and fraudulent means to remain in the country and obtain work to which they were not entitled.

“This case sends a clear message that people who ignore immigration law do so at their peril. They will be caught and they will be brought to justice.”

The trio had pleaded guilty to the charges against them at an earlier hearing.

Samugana admitted using a false ID card and fraud, Oluwatobi Adegnbenro and Olaseni Adegbenro both admitted possession of false ID documents with intent and seeking leave to remain in the UK by deception.

German Bank Employee Falls Asleep On Keyboard, Transfers Millions

A tired German bank employee fell asleep on his keyboard and accidentally transformed a minor transfer into a 222 million euro ($311 million) order, a court heard.

The Hessen labour court heard that the man was supposed to transfer just 62.40 euros from a bank account belonging to a retiree, but instead “fell asleep for an instant, while pushing onto the number 2 key on the keyboard” – making it a huge 222,222,222.22 euro order.

The bank discovered the mistake shortly afterwards and corrected the error.


The case was taken to court by the man’s 48-year-old colleague who was fired for letting the mistake slip through when verifying the order.

The court ruled that the plaintiff should be reinstated in his job.

Militiamen Attack Gbagyi Village In Kaduna

According to senior security official in Kaduna State, heavily armed members of an unidentified militia group attacked a Gbagyi village late yesterday.
The incident occurred in Damisa-Zankaro in Chikun local government area of Central Kaduna.
Popularly known Gwari, members of the Gbagyi ethnic group, are historical owners of Kaduna town and are alsoliving in Minna, Abuja and Birnin Gwari in Kaduna and Nasarawa states.
The security source said, "The armed militiamen met a stiff resistance from the local populace who used locally made weapons to defend themselves, before the arrival of armed security operatives.
The Gwari people were defending themselves before a contingent of armed security arrived.
The exact casualty figures remained unknown as security officials were still battling to secure the village.
Some of the security people are rushing the injured to hospitals in Kaduna town."

Not Again! American Tourist Gang-Raped in Northern India

An American tourist was allegedly gang-raped by a truck driver and two of his accomplices in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, local police said Tuesday.
"The 30-year-old was raped by men in a truck on Monday night. They offered her a lift and she accepted it," police inspector Abhimanyu Kumar told AFP.
The incident took place in Manali, a tourist destination 500 kilometres (300 miles) from the capital New Delhi.
Kumar said the medical tests have confirmed that the tourist was raped and police were hunting for the accused men.
"The woman cannot remember the number plate of the truck and she could not understand what the accused were talking about. They drove the truck to an isolated spot and raped her for nearly one hour," he said.
Kumar said every truck driver in Manali had been ordered to report at the local police station as part of the investigation.
On Monday, police in eastern India arrested a local businessman for allegedly drugging and raping an Irish charity worker after her birthday party.
A survey by a trade body released earlier this year found that the number of foreign women tourists visiting India had dropped by 35 percent following several sex attacks that have made global headlines.
The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India reported earlier this year that female tourist arrivals had fallen after the fatal gang-rape of a 23-year-old Indian student by six men on a bus in New Delhi in December.
The gang-rape brought simmering anger about endemic sex crimes in the country to the surface and led to sometimes violent protests in cities across the country.
A Swiss cyclist was gang-raped in central state of Madhya Pradesh in March, while a South Korean tourist was allegedly drugged and raped in the same state in January by the son of the owner of a hotel where she was staying.

A teenager was arrested after she tried to blackmail a man into giving her money every week or face jail for rape, USA.
The teenager was trying to buy herself a sugar daddy by threatening to file rape charges if he refused to pay.
Selena Velasquez, 17, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, has been arrested after she had consensual sex with a 43-year-old man, and then threatened to file rape charges if he does not hand over $500 per week.
According to state police, Velasquez was at a Cinco de Mayo party in Pecos, where she met the 43-year-old man, and had consensual sex with him.
After the meeting, Velasquez told the man that she would report the encounter as rape if he did not pay her $500 every Friday for at least three consecutive weeks.
Investigators said that Velasquez made matters worse by going over to the man’s job uninvited and was sending him threatening messages via text. She allegedly threatened to hurt him and his daughter.
"I am not justifying what the girl did, but come on, why would a young teenager agree to sleep with an older man if not for his money?
A 47-year-old man has no business sleeping with a young girl in the first place. He should look for someone closer to his age," Sharon Olson, 46, a mother of two teenagers said.
The man reported the blackmail to police. Investigators told the victim to call Velasquez and agree to her demands, while they monitored the call.
Velasquez agreed to meet the victim at a local Walmart, where he was to make the first $500 payment. When Valesquez accepted the envelope, officers swooped in and arrested her.
During questioning, Valesquez allegedly admitted to having consensual sex with the man. She was taken to jail soon after.
She was incarcerated in the Juvenile Detention Center of Santa Fe County and charged with felony extortion. The man was not charged in the case, as the age of consent in New Mexico is 16-years-old.

52 graduate with First Class at Babcock

No fewer than 52 students, yesterday, graduated with First Class honours at Babcock University, BU, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State. 1,059 made Second Class Upper, while 248 made Second Class Lower.
BU’s President/Vice Chancellor, Prof. James Makinde, said 1,359 graduands were awarded degrees and diploma, cutting across the nine faculties of the university.
Twenty graduated with Postgraduate Diplomas, 71 with Masters and 41, Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D.
He said: “1,359 graduands will be awarded degrees and diplomas in Basic Applied Sciences, Public and Allied Health, Education and Humanities, Babcock Business School, Law and Security Studies, Computing and Engineering Sciences, Nursing Sciences, Agriculture and Industrial Technology, and the Benjamin S. Carson School of Medicine, in its Biochemistry programme.”
Makinde said no Third Class or Pass was recorded, adding that “the university is commitment to producing functional employable graduates with entrepreneurship skills.”
