As the debate over amnesty for the Boko Haram sect continues, fears
have once again gripped teachers in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital,
as a group suspected to belong to the Boko Haram sect sent out warnings
to primary and secondary school teachers in the town to stop going to
school or risk bomb attacks.
NE gathered that some of the teachers received the warning in the
morning of Thursday while preparing for the day’s academic programmes in
their various schools. According to sources, teachers in schools around
Kasuwa Guza Road in Lamisila Ward, Maiduguri, were sternly warned by
the group to stay away from school or risk attacks.
The teachers, who were said to have been accosted on their way to
school, were said to have been shocked by the threat and quickly left
for their various homes.
NE investigations also revealed that since the attack on some
primary schools in Maiduguri, during which three teachers were killed
and many others were injured, attendance by teachers and students in
schools have reduced, as many parents no longer allow their children and
wards to attend schools for fear of being attacked.
Meanwhile, the Joint Task Force (JTF) has intensified efforts on
patrol and checking of vehicles at all the entry points into the state
capital, with a view to arresting any suspected member of the group
before they enter the town.
