Senator
representing Lagos Central at the National Assembly, Oluremi Tinubu,
has extolled the virtues of the late human rights activist, Dr. Tai
Solarin.
She also urged the youth in the country to imbibe the virtues of Solarin and to be focused.
Tinubu, represented by the Secretary of
the New Era Foundation, Mrs. Adeola Giwa, said this at the 7th Tai
Solarin National Memorial Lecture in Lagos on Thursday.
Tinubu said, “Focus is one of the things our youths need in Nigeria. Another thing is wide reading which gives exposure.”
She noted that Solarin was a man with exposure and focus which made him successful in his career.
She added, “He exposed his mind to wide reading and had a focus in what he wanted to do, which he harnessed to aid his career.”
According to her, if Nigerian schools
are modelled in the pattern of impacting academic and vocational skills,
there will not be the much reliance on white-collar jobs.
She said Solarin was a charismatic and
visionary person who ensured that Mayflower School imparted academic and
vocational skills.
Tinubu also eulogised the efforts of Sheila, wife of Solarin, for continuing the legacy of her husband.
She added, “I will like to appreciate
the efforts of Madam Sheila Solarin for continuing the support she has
given her husband. She has ensured that the flame keeps burning.”
The guest lecturer, Prof. Zakari
Mohammed, of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaira, urged Nigerians to
embrace information technology in order to cope with future challenges.
Mohammed, who spoke on ‘The Dynamics of
Information: Embracing the Present to Cope with the Future,’ said,
“Information is a vital and strategic resource that shapes and impacts
on our daily life.”
“The exposure to information affects the behaviour and disposition of individuals.
“It is agreed that our actions and
inactions, plans and strategies and indeed the extent of our national
socio-economic, political, scientific, technological, educational and
human development are largely the extent to which we are exposed to
relevant information.”
He said Solarin was a great educationist who whose legacy had imprinted on the minds of people of this country and beyond.
