Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has urged the judiciary to stop assisting the police legalise illegality. Oshiomhole said this during the unveiling of the Edo State High Court (Civil Procedure Rules 2012) in Benin
on Tuesday. Highlighting the importance of speedy dispensation of justice, the governor said nobody should be treated as
a sacred cow in the dispensation of justice. He said, “Just recently police in the state arrested an innocent person and charged him for murder without
any convincing evidence. This should never happen in a democracy. It is as bad as Decree 2 under the
military. “When police abuse their power by arresting innocent people, the judiciary should refuse to assist them to
legalise it. I commend the courage of the judge who granted bail even as the police did not obey rules, and
also the second judge that finally granted the bail that the police had no choice but to comply with. “The court should expedite action on matters where the issues before the court are clearly frivolous,
especially in granting bail application, and where they declare the rascality within the ranks of the police force,
when those things happen, they should be exposed.” Chief Judge of the state, Justice Cromwell Idahosa, said the new Edo State (Civil Procedures) Rules would
aid easy access to justice, which he said was the hallmark of justice. He said, “If the lawyers are ready, the judges are ready to dispense justice in less than three months, for us
here justice delayed and justice denied will soon lose relevance as acliche.”
